ENCHANTING

SARDINIA

The island of wonders

from Tuesday 25 May to Monday 31 May 2021

SUMMARY

A complete tour of the big island in the heart of the Mediterranean, which will allow us to embrace its endless, spectacular scenery and the blue of its waters, which we’ll admire from the sea stacks, from hidden beaches and from vast sandy bays. From the island’s best-known beach resorts, we’ll travel inland to explore more wild and unspoiled landscapes and the impenetrable mountains. From the sophisticated centre of Nuoro to the murals of Orgosolo, and from Giara di Gesturi to the imposing nuraghic village of Su Nuraxi, the week will combine intense riding pleasure on some truly spectacular roads with equally intense emotions and human experiences, as we delve into Sardinian culture, as ancient, deep and mysterious as it is.

Equally varied and inviting are the meals we’ll enjoy each day, both meat and fish based, connected by roads that are extraordinarily beautiful and offer unlimited riding pleasure. An extraordinary itinerary, for an almost complete tour of Sardinia that will see us explore the most spectacular spots both along the coastline and in the less explored hinterland.

Day 1, Tuesday 25 May: Pontedera – Livorno

about km 40

On the first afternoon, we will meet in Pontedera where we will assign the bikes and visit the Piaggio Museum with its 250 stunning bikes, which include some symbolic Moto Guzzimodels. Then it’s on to the port of Livorno, where we will board the ferry to Olbia.

Day 2, Wednesday 26 May: Olbia – Alghero

about km 280

We’ll spend our first day on the island in the far north, tracing an arc along the coast as we travel from the cultured Costa Smeralda as far as enchanting Alghero. Along the way, we’ll take in the beautiful beaches of Santa Teresa di Gallura along the strip of land that combines the mainland to the Capo Testa promontory, as well as Castelsardoand its medieval fortress, and incredible views of Capo Caccia. And so we reach Alghero, which overlooks a splendid natural cove with a coastline almost 100 kilometres in length. Known as the Riviera del Corallo, it is home to a extensive, high-quality coral reef. Alghero is an historic city, as well as a renowned tourist centre, which retains traces of its Catalan domination. We will visit the centre and walk along the ancient bastions in the port.

Day 3, Thursday 27 May: Alghero – Is Molas

about km 290

As we wind along the coast, the first 50 km stretch will take us to the beautiful multi-coloured village of Bosa Marina. The area has been nominated as a heritage site due to its outstanding natural beauty. Having got our breath back, we will deviate inland towardsMontiferru, an ancient extinct volcanocovered in dense forest, and then take a trip to “Giara di Gesturi”. A magical place with unique characteristics, this basaltic plateau rises sharply and dominates the surrounding flat countryside. Its summit is something of an ecosystem, home to rare animals and plants including the famous small horses, Europe’s only colony of wild horses. From herewe descend quickly to Cagliariand Is Molas where we will base ourselves for two days.

Day 4, Friday 28 May: the south-west coast and the Iglesiente

about km 270

Another dream day. We’ll spend the morning enjoying sea views in the south-westerly corner of the island and the afternoon exploring the evocative Iglesiente area, famous for its mines.

First we’ll ride back up the south-west point, across from the islands of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro, all the way to the delightfulfishing village of Portoscuso. Then we’ll continue along the coast, enjoying a particularly beautiful section around the village of Nebida, all the way to the charming little harbour of Buggerru.

We will then head back inland to enjoy a winding section that is a favourite with local riders, immersed in wild and lonely nature, as we ridetowards Fluminimaggiore and the Iglesiente.

Day 5, Saturday 29 May: Is Molas – Arbatax

about km 290

Towards we will ride towards the island’s south-easterly corner, which offers some extraordinary sea views. It will be hard to remember them all or choose a favourite come the end of the trip! We’ll then climb inland, to legendary Barbagia, the heart of the island, with its small, sheltered villages, before finishing the day at the foot of the famous Red Rocks of Arbatax.

Day 6, Sunday 30 May: Arbatax – Olbia

about Km 270

We’ll finish our tour in style with another coastal gem, or rather Cala Gonone, before again travelling inland towards the beautiful city of Nuoro, or “Sardinian Athens”, for a walk down its narrow, cobbled streets as we admire the ancient stone houses, courtyards, porticos and piazzas. Then it’s back down to Olbia where we will board the ferry.
